Our read on COMT
BThe GSCI pick in a field full of Bloomberg-index trackers. COMT holds a broad basket of commodity futures and lets a dynamic-roll rulebook choose contract months instead of parking in the front month.
The fund seeks to track the S&P GSCI Dynamic Roll (USD) Total Return Index, which represents a broad commodity exposure with enhanced roll selection across sectors.
Why people hold it
- Tracks the S&P GSCI Dynamic Roll index, which picks contract months further out the curve rather than defaulting to the nearest one, a design aimed at blunting roll cost.ishares.com
- At 0.49% a year, it undercuts the typical broad commodity futures fund, where the middle of the pack sits closer to 0.68%.
- Trading since 2014, a billion-dollar-plus fund with steady volume, and one of the stronger implementations in the broad commodity futures group.
- Well over a hundred futures positions spread across commodity sectors, so no single contract drives the outcome.
Worth knowing
- Cheaper broad-basket rivals exist, including iShares' own CMDY alongside BCI, BCD and CERY, all priced in the 0.26% to 0.30% range.
- Commodity futures move hard in both directions. Volatility is the roughest edge of this fund's profile, not a footnote to it.
- It is a commodity pool rather than a plain stock fund: payouts land once or twice a year and tax reporting follows its own rules. The prospectus spells them out.ishares.com
