Our read on DIA
AThe Dow in one ticker, trading since 1998. Thirty blue chips weighted by share price instead of company size, with membership decided by a committee rather than a formula. The odd one out among index funds, on purpose.
The fund seeks investment results that generally correspond to the price and yield performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
Why people hold it
- 0.16% a year, roughly a third of the 0.45% median for its index-tracking cohort, and it has tracked the Dow very closely.
- Launched January 1998 and now a multi-billion-dollar, actively traded fund, with one of the strongest tradability profiles in its peer group.
- Pays monthly, not quarterly, which is rare for a plain-vanilla stock index fund.ssga.com
- About 30 household-name US large caps. You can read the entire portfolio in a minute and know exactly what you own.ssga.com
Worth knowing
- The Dow is price-weighted: a high-priced stock moves the index more than a cheaper one, whatever the companies are actually worth.ssga.com
- Membership is chosen by an Averages Committee (Wall Street Journal, S&P DJI and CME staff), not a rules screen, and 30 names leaves gaps a broad-market fund fills.ssga.com
- Unit investment trust plumbing: dividends sit in cash until the payout instead of being reinvested, the trust offers no reinvestment service, and it does not lend securities.sec.govsec.gov
