This fund multiplies its index's move each day and resets that multiple daily. Because daily returns compound, its long-run return can differ from the headline multiple.

Our read on DXD

ETF.net Research

BThe middle gear in ProShares' inverse Dow lineup: DXD aims for twice the opposite of the Dow's daily move. Running since 2006, it doubles the Dow's downside without stepping up to a triple.

Stated mandate

DXD seeks daily, pre-expense returns equal to approximately twice the inverse of the Dow Jones Industrial Average's daily performance. It is designed to rise when the Index falls and decline when the Index rises.

Why people hold it

  1. 01At 1.06% a year it undercuts the typical leveraged or inverse fund, unusual for a product that rebuilds its exposure every single day.
  2. 02One job, stated plainly in the prospectus: about twice the inverse of the Dow's daily performance, before expenses. It has tracked that daily target closely.proshares.com
  3. 03Sits between DOG at -1x and SDOW at -3x on the same index, so the full Dow-inverse ladder lives under one issuer with one set of mechanics.
  4. 04Live since 2006 and actively traded, a long run for a leveraged fund and one of the sturdier implementations in its peer group.

Worth knowing

  1. 01The 2x target resets daily. Hold for weeks and compounding takes the wheel, so results can diverge sharply from twice the inverse of the Dow's move over that stretch.proshares.com
  2. 02Small asset base next to core index funds, which fits a vehicle built for short holding periods rather than buy-and-forget.
  3. 03The reference point is the Dow's 30 blue chips, not the broad market, so it can behave differently from an S&P 500 or Nasdaq-based position.

This fund targets a multiple of the daily move of its index and resets daily. Hold it longer than one reset and compounding makes the return diverge from that target. In choppy markets it can lose value even when the index ends flat.

How much the fund’s monthly returns vary, scaled to a year.
23.2%
Annualised · 36 months to Aug 2026
How it’s calculated: standard deviation

The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.

Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.

Return above 3-month US Treasury bills per unit of volatility.
−1.14
vs 3-month T-bills · to Aug 2026
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio

Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.

Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.

Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.

The largest fall from a peak to the low that followed.
−68.7%
Trough Aug 2026
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown

The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.

Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.

How strongly the fund’s returns move with its asset-class index.
−1.65

How it’s calculated: beta

The beta figure is supplied by FMP. The comparison index depends on the fund’s broad asset class.
