Our read on EES
CEES buys only U.S. small caps that actually earn money, then weights them by the size of those profits instead of market value. A 2007-vintage answer to the unprofitable tail that cap-weighted small-cap funds carry.
The fund seeks to track the investment results of earnings-generating small-cap companies in the U.S. equity market.
Why people hold it
- The index screens for earnings-generating companies and weights by profits, so a stock's spot is tied to what it earns, not to what the market is willing to pay for it.wisdomtree.com
- Roughly 900 stocks in the basket. That is a wide net for a screened fund, so no single small cap carries the portfolio.
- Running since 2007, it has tracked its earnings-weighted index through the financial crisis and every small-cap cycle since. Long history, one consistent rulebook.
- Follows its index closely, and pays out on a quarterly schedule.
Worth knowing
- At 0.38% a year, it costs more than the small-cap category's typical fund, and well more than plain cap-weighted options like VB (0.03%) and SCHA (0.03%).
- Thinly traded next to the category's giants, so bid-ask spreads can run wider, especially in fast markets.
- The profit screen leaves out unprofitable small caps by design, so returns will diverge from a standard small-cap index in both directions.

EES Risk
- 19.6%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.
- 0.60
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −27.4%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
- 1.01
How it’s calculated: beta
The beta figure is supplied by FMP. The comparison index depends on the fund’s broad asset class.
