Our read on ELD

ETF.net Research

CMost emerging-market local-debt ETFs clone the J.P. Morgan GBI-EM index. ELD treats it as a scorecard instead: a 2010-vintage active fund picking its own mix of local-currency government bonds.

Stated mandate

The Fund seeks high total returns combining income and capital appreciation. Its strategy is to pursue that objective primarily through debt denominated in emerging-market local currencies.

Why people hold it

  1. 01The benchmark is a yardstick, not a blueprint. An active mandate lets managers lean into or away from countries the index weights by rule.
  2. 02Co-managed by WisdomTree and Mellon Investments, so an outside bond shop's credit and currency work sits behind the portfolio.investing.com
  3. 03Spreads exposure across a couple hundred positions and every major EM region: Latin America, Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
  4. 04Income lands monthly rather than quarterly, and the mandate targets both yield and price appreciation from local-currency debt.

Worth knowing

  1. 01At 0.55%, the fee is category-median but well above the 0.30% charged by index trackers EMLC and LEMB. Active calls have to cover that gap.
  2. 02It trades far less than the category's heavyweights, so wider bid-ask spreads are more likely, especially in size or in a jumpy market.
  3. 03Currency is unhedged. Returns ride local rates and EM currencies against the dollar, which can cut both ways.wisdomtree.com
