Our read on CBON

ETF.net Research

DThe first US-listed ETF to open China's onshore bond market to American buyers, back in 2014. One country, one currency, a few dozen RMB bonds from government, policy-bank and credit issuers.

Stated mandate

The fund seeks to replicate the price and yield performance of the FTSE Chinese Broad Bond 0–10 Diversified Select Index before fees and expenses. The index covers fixed-rate, RMB-denominated bonds issued in China by credit, governmental, and quasi-governmental issuers.

Why people hold it

  1. 01Launched in 2014 as the first US-listed ETF for China's onshore bonds, a market long walled off from foreign investors. Still a rare single-country way in.vaneck.com
  2. 02The index blends government, policy-bank and credit issuers and caps maturities at 10 years, so it is a short-to-intermediate onshore slice, not a pure sovereign play.vaneck.com
  3. 03Costs 0.50% a year, a shade under the typical fee in its emerging-market local-currency bond peer group, and it pays income monthly.

Worth knowing

  1. 01Holdings are RMB-denominated, so the dollar value moves with the yuan as well as with Chinese rates.vaneck.com
  2. 02Small and thinly traded next to giant EM local-debt peers like EMLC and LEMB, which can mean wider spreads and more work getting a fill.
  3. 03A few dozen bonds, one country, one central bank. Diversification here comes from issuer type, not from geography.
