Our read on EYLD
DMost emerging-market income funds count dividends. EYLD counts the whole payout: dividends, buybacks and debt paydown, ranked by Cambria's own quant model across roughly 120 emerging-market names. The shareholder-yield idea, exported to EM since 2016.
The fund focuses on emerging-market companies that return cash to shareholders through dividends, share buybacks, and net debt reduction.
Why people hold it
- Cash back to owners is measured three ways: dividends, share buybacks and debt paydown. A company shrinking its share count or its balance-sheet debt counts, even if the dividend is modest.cambriafunds.com
- Not just a yield sort. Cambria takes the top slice of its emerging-market universe on shareholder yield, then layers on valuation, market-cap, sector and liquidity filters before the portfolio is set.sec.gov
- Roughly 120 holdings rebalanced at least quarterly, so the screen refreshes as payout behavior changes and no single name is meant to carry the fund.sec.gov
- Trading since 2016 with a few hundred million in assets, and it pays out quarterly rather than hoarding the cash it screens for.
Worth knowing
- At 0.65% a year, it charges more than the typical fund in its emerging-market dividend group, and index-based rivals go far cheaper (DIEM at 0.19%, EDIV at 0.49%).
- That fee is the main reason it sits in the lower reaches of its peer group on our review, despite a portfolio that screens well.
- Emerging-market equity, currency unhedged. Buyback and debt-paydown names can pay less cash than a pure high-dividend screen, so the quarterly distribution moves around.
