Our read on SDEM
CMost emerging-market dividend funds spread money across hundreds of names. SDEM goes the other way: roughly 50 of the highest-yielding stocks in EM, weighted equally, with cash paid out monthly. A concentrated, unapologetic yield hunt.
The fund seeks to match, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the MSCI Emerging Markets Top 50 Dividend Index.
Why people hold it
- The mandate is blunt and easy to check: track the MSCI Emerging Markets Top 50 Dividend Index, which screens the EM universe down to the 50 highest yielders and weights them equally rather than by size.globalxetfs.commoney.usnews.com
- Equal weighting keeps the usual EM index giants from dominating. Every name in the basket counts the same at rebalance, so the yield screen (not market cap) drives the portfolio.money.usnews.com
- Distributions land monthly, not quarterly, and the fund has run this same strategy since its 2015 launch. Long track record, no strategy drift.
- In practice it stays close to the index it advertises, which is what you want from a rules-based screen: the label and the holdings tell the same story.
Worth knowing
- At 0.66% a year, it costs more than the EM dividend median and well more than cheaper options like DIEM (0.19%) and EDIV (0.49%). You pay up for the concentrated screen.
- Small fund, thin volume. Spreads can be wider than in the big EM dividend names, so limit orders matter more here than with a heavily traded peer.
- Chasing the top 50 yielders concentrates the portfolio in whichever countries and sectors are cheap at rebalance, and high yields sometimes signal stress rather than strength.globalxetfs.com
