Our read on EZET
BFranklin's spot ether fund carries a 0% expense ratio in an aisle where the typical rival charges 0.25%. Same coin, same brokerage account, nothing skimmed off the top.
The fund is described as an actively managed exchange-traded fund.
Why people hold it
- Zero expense ratio against a 0.25% median for spot ether funds. It undercuts the whole group on fee, including ETH at 0.15% and ETHW at 0.20%.
- Simple plumbing: a grantor trust that holds ether itself. No futures roll, no leverage, no index tricks between you and the coin.
- Does the one job on the label, holding ether and tracking its price closely, and rates among the stronger implementations in the spot ether group.
- Trading since July 2024, run by Franklin Templeton rather than a crypto-only startup.
Worth knowing
- One of the smaller and less traded funds in the category, which can mean wider spreads and more care needed on larger orders.
- No distributions. Everything rides on ether's price, and that price swings hard in both directions.
- Short history: the fund, and the US spot ether category around it, only date to 2024, so there is limited track record across market cycles.

- 77.4%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.
- 0.12
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.

How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
