Our read on FDT
DA 2011-vintage quant screen pointed at developed markets outside the US: rank stocks on growth and value signals, hold roughly 300 of them, ignore market cap. That conviction costs more than most multifactor rivals.
The Fund seeks investment results that generally correspond to the price and yield of the Nasdaq AlphaDEX® Developed Markets Ex-USTM Index before fees and expenses.
Why people hold it
- Not a cap-weighted index in a costume. The AlphaDEX screen ranks developed ex-US stocks on growth and value measures, then holds roughly 300 of the survivors.ftportfolios.com
- Running since 2011, so this is a long live record for the strategy overseas, not a backtest with a ticker attached.
- A multi-billion-dollar fund with moderate trading activity, and it distributes on a quarterly schedule.
Worth knowing
- At 0.80% a year, it charges more than double the 0.38% median for international multifactor funds. INTF (0.16%) and FDEV (0.18%) run similar ideas for far less.
- That fee is the main reason it lands in the lower half of its international multifactor peer group, despite sound plumbing and a deep asset base.
- A growth-and-value screen builds a portfolio that can look nothing like a standard developed-markets index, so its path will diverge from EAFE-style funds.ftportfolios.com

FDT Risk
- 16.7%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.
- 1.25
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −31.6%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
