Our read on GOVZ
CCoupons stripped away: this fund holds only the principal payments of Treasury bonds with 25+ years left. No interest along the way, just one distant payoff, which makes it the longest-duration corner of the government bond aisle.
The fund seeks to track an index of principal STRIPS from U.S. Treasury bonds with at least 25 years remaining to maturity.
Why people hold it
- A purer duration tool than standard long-Treasury funds. Principal STRIPS with at least 25 years to run carry no coupons, so the whole payoff sits far out on the curve.ishares.com
- Tracks the ICE BofA Long US Treasury Principal STRIPS Index closely, one of the tighter index implementations among long Treasury funds.
- Cash still shows up monthly, even though the underlying STRIPS make no coupon payments before maturity.
- Fee runs 0.15%, matching the typical long Treasury fund and matching ZROZ, the only other ETF on the same declared index.
Worth knowing
- Median price, not cheap price. VGLT (0.03%), BBLB (0.04%) and EDV (0.05%) deliver long Treasury exposure for a fraction of the 0.15% here.
- Maximum duration cuts both ways. Zero-coupon STRIPS swing harder on rate moves than coupon-paying Treasury funds like TLT, in both directions.
- A 2020 launch that trades moderately rather than heavily, so spreads can be wider than the aisle's most heavily traded names.

GOVZ Risk
- 22.1%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.
- −0.42
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.

Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −57.9%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
- 3.63
How it’s calculated: beta
The beta figure is supplied by FMP. The comparison index depends on the fund’s broad asset class.
