Our read on HERD

ETF.net Research

BPacer's whole Cash Cows family in one ticker. Rather than making you pick which free-cash-flow fund to own, HERD tracks an index built out of them, and charges 0.15% to do the sorting.

Stated mandate

The Fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the total return of the Pacer Cash Cows Fund of Funds Index. It is composed of Pacer Cash Cows ETFs, whose underlying indexes use rules-based cash-flow strategies.

Why people hold it

  1. 01One ticker, the whole herd: it holds Pacer's Cash Cows ETFs rather than individual stocks, so you skip the choose-your-flavor step.
  2. 020.15% a year, well under the typical fee in its multifactor peer group, which is a low sticker price for a wrapper that holds other funds.
  3. 03Runs on published rules, not hunches: the underlying indexes screen companies on cash flow, and the fund tracks the index that packages them.
  4. 04Trading since 2019, so the strategy has a live record instead of a backtest.

Worth knowing

  1. 01Thinly traded. Spreads can run wider than on the household-name value ETFs, and that bites most on large or rushed orders.
  2. 02One idea applied everywhere: free cash flow. That is a value tilt, and it can look very different from a plain market-cap index.
  3. 03Cash lands once or twice a year, not monthly, so it is not wired as a steady income drip.
