Our read on HFXI
CMost developed-market funds make you pick a side on the dollar. HFXI splits the difference, tracking a FTSE index that hedges half its foreign currency exposure back to USD. A deliberate middle path, running since 2015.
The Fund passively seeks to track the performance of the FTSE Developed ex North America 50% Hedged to USD Index before fees and expenses. The index represents developed-market international equities with partial currency hedging against the U.S. dollar.
Why people hold it
- The 50% hedge is written into the index, not left to a manager's judgment. Half the currency exposure is neutralized, in either direction, all the time.
- Roughly 800 developed-market stocks outside the US and Canada, held passively. Broad exposure with no stock-picking layer bolted on.
- Live since 2015 and now a multibillion-dollar fund, paying distributions quarterly.
Worth knowing
- 0.19% a year. The plain unhedged giants (VEA, SPDW, SCHF) charge 0.03%, so the half-hedge carries a real price tag.
- A half hedge cuts both ways: it softens the hit when the dollar climbs and clips the lift when the dollar falls.
- Moderately traded rather than one of the category's volume leaders, so limit orders earn their keep.
