Our read on HTAB

ETF.net Research

CMost funds in the aggregate-bond aisle chase yield before taxes. HTAB chases what survives them: its stated goal is after-tax total return from investment-grade bonds, and it is measured against a municipal bond benchmark rather than a taxable aggregate one.

Stated mandate

The Fund seeks after-tax total return through a diversified portfolio of fixed-income debt instruments with varying maturities. It normally invests at least 80% of assets in U.S.-dollar-denominated, investment-grade fixed-income debt.

Why people hold it

  1. 01The mandate is written around after-tax total return, so the tax bill is part of the job, not an afterthought.
  2. 02Benchmarked to the Bloomberg Municipal Bond Index, which sets it apart from the taxable aggregate trackers it shares a shelf with.
  3. 03Pays monthly, and spreads the work across roughly 300 positions with at least 80% in US-dollar investment-grade debt.
  4. 04Live since 2018, so there is a multi-year operating record behind the strategy.

Worth knowing

  1. 010.39% a year sits above the category median and well above the 0.03% charged by index giants like BND and SCHZ. The tax-aware management is what you are paying for.
  2. 02The after-tax focus only does work where taxes actually bite; inside a tax-sheltered account that edge largely disappears.
  3. 03Moderately traded rather than a household-name index fund, so execution costs deserve a look on bigger orders.
