Our read on ICLN
AThe 2008 original in clean energy, and still the one most investors trade. Roughly 100 clean-energy companies from around the world in one ticker, for a fee well under the category's typical tab.
The fund seeks to track an index representing global equities in the clean energy sector.
Why people hold it
- Costs 0.39% a year against a clean-energy peer-group median of 0.59%, and no fund in the cohort's top tier charges less.
- Trading since June 2008 and among the most actively traded funds in the theme, which is rare air for a niche as narrow as this one.
- Truly global: it tracks the S&P Global Clean Energy Transition Index, about 100 names worldwide, not a US-only slice of the build-out.ishares.com
- Backed by iShares, the deepest bench in indexing, and the index rulebook (not a manager's hunch) decides what counts as clean energy.
Worth knowing
- One theme, one sector. Policy changes, rates and project economics move this fund far more than they move a broad market index.
- Global mandate means mostly non-US stocks, so currency moves ride along with the share prices.
- About 100 holdings sounds broad, but the theme's biggest names carry real weight in the index.
