Our read on FAN

ETF.net Research

BClean energy funds usually blend a bit of everything. FAN picks one technology and stays there: a global, wind-only index of roughly 60 stocks, running since 2008.

Stated mandate

The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the ISE Clean Edge Global Wind Energy Index, an equity index focused on companies active in wind energy.

Why people hold it

  1. 01Wind only, not clean energy in general. It tracks an index built around companies active in wind energy, so the theme stays undiluted.
  2. 02Trading since 2008, so it carries a full-cycle record through the theme's booms and busts.
  3. 03Global by mandate. Wind's supply chain and project pipelines are not a US story, and the basket reaches across markets in roughly 60 names.
  4. 04Sits in the top quartile of the clean energy funds we cover, and it pays distributions quarterly.

Worth knowing

  1. 01At 0.61% a year it prices above the cohort median and above broader clean-energy options such as ICLN and FRNW at 0.39%.
  2. 02One technology, roughly 60 stocks. Turbine order cycles, policy shifts and rates steer this basket more than a diversified clean-energy mix.
  3. 03Moderately traded rather than a category heavyweight, so the bid-ask spread matters more on large or hurried orders.
