Our read on IJH
AThe mid-cap middle child, done cheap. IJH has tracked the S&P MidCap 400 since 2000 for five basis points, and it's one of the most heavily traded ways to own roughly 400 mid-sized US companies.
The fund seeks to track the S&P MidCap 400 Index and provide exposure to mid-sized U.S. companies. It is presented as a low-cost core portfolio holding.
Why people hold it
- Five basis points a year, about a third of the typical cost in its S&P 400 peer group, and a fraction of MDY's 0.23% for the very same index.
- Running since 2000 and among the most actively traded funds in the mid-cap aisle, with assets in the multi-billions.
- The mandate is one line: hold the S&P MidCap 400, roughly 400 mid-sized US companies. No tilts, no screens, no style drift. Pays quarterly.ishares.com
- iShares built it as a core building block, and it sits among the strongest implementations of this index in its peer group.ishares.com
Worth knowing
- It is not the cheapest seat: SPMD tracks the same index at 0.03%. Two basis points, if cost is your only tiebreaker.
- Mid-caps only. No mega-cap ballast, no small caps, so this works as a sleeve beside a large-cap core rather than a whole US portfolio.
- All US, all stocks. Nothing here diversifies you outside American equity markets.
