Our read on XJH
BThe S&P MidCap 400 with a bouncer at the door. XJH tracks a screened version of the same mid-cap benchmark, dropping companies tied to tobacco, thermal coal, oil sands, fossil fuel reserves and weapons.
The fund seeks to track an ESG-screened version of the S&P MidCap 400 Index, providing core U.S. mid-cap equity exposure while excluding certain controversial business activities.
Why people hold it
- A trim, not a rebuild: still roughly 400 mid-cap names from the same S&P index family, with exclusions taken off the top rather than the whole portfolio re-weighted.ishares.com
- The screens are spelled out, not vibes: revenue thresholds and categorical exclusions set by the index provider for weapons, small arms, tobacco, oil sands, thermal coal and fossil fuel reserves.ishares.com
- 0.12% a year, below the median for S&P MidCap 400 trackers, and it pays out quarterly. Cheap for a screened product, and it does what the label says.
Worth knowing
- One of the quieter tickers in its peer group. Thin volume can mean wider spreads, so limit orders matter more here than with the mega-liquid mid-cap funds.
- The unscreened versions cost less: IJH runs 0.05% and SPMD 0.03%. The screen is what you're paying the difference for.
- Exclusion-only, not best-in-class ranking. Cutting whole energy-linked categories means sector weights can drift from the parent S&P MidCap 400.sec.govishares.com
