Our read on IJT
BMost "growth" funds are large-cap tech wearing a different label. IJT stays small: roughly 400 S&P SmallCap 600 names chosen on measures like above-average earnings and revenue growth, a job it has held since 2000.
The fund tracks a U.S. small-cap growth index whose constituents are selected using measures such as above-average earnings and revenue growth.
Why people hold it
- Rules, not vibes. Holdings come from the S&P SmallCap 600 Growth Index, which selects on measures such as above-average earnings and revenue growth.ishares.com
- Live since 2000 and now a multi-billion-dollar fund, spread across about 400 stocks so no single name runs the show. It pays out quarterly.
- It hugs its index closely and the portfolio itself is one of the sturdier builds in the growth group, landing IJT in the upper half of its peer set.
Worth knowing
- The 0.18% fee is middle-of-the-pack for growth ETFs and several times the large-cap options VUG (0.03%) and SCHG (0.04%), or small-cap growth rival VBK (0.05%).
- Small-cap growth is the jumpier end of the market. Swings here tend to run wider than in the mega-cap growth funds that dominate the category.
- Moderately traded rather than a volume machine, so spreads can be wider than on the biggest growth ETFs. Limit orders are the standard workaround.
