Our read on IYY
CA 2000-vintage broad US equity fund, IYY packs roughly a thousand large- and mid-cap names into one ticker and hugs its index tightly. The trade-off: it charges several times what today's cheapest total-market wrappers do.
The fund seeks to track the investment results of a broad-based index composed of U.S. equities, providing broad exposure to U.S. large- and mid-cap stocks.
Why people hold it
- Roughly a thousand large- and mid-cap US stocks in one line item, the whole domestic blue-chip and mid-tier field without picking names.ishares.com
- Tracking is the strong suit here: it follows the Dow Jones U.S. Index with very little drift, among the tightest implementations in the total-market group.
- Launched in 2000, one of the older broad-market ETFs still trading, with a record spanning several full market cycles.
- A multi-billion-dollar iShares fund that pays out quarterly.
Worth knowing
- The 0.20% annual fee is the sticking point: VTI, ITOT and SCHB deliver comparable total-market exposure at 0.03%.
- Thinly traded next to the category's giants, so spreads and limit orders matter more, especially on larger tickets.
- The mandate targets large and mid caps, so the small-cap end of the US market sits outside the index.ishares.com
