Our read on KOKU
BKokusai is Japanese for overseas, and that is the blueprint here: the developed world with exactly one country cut out, Japan. A 0.09% wrapper on everything else, the US included.
The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the MSCI Kokusai Index, also known as the MSCI World ex Japan Index. It uses passive full-replication indexing to access developed-market equities excluding Japan.
Why people hold it
- 0.09% a year, half the typical fee in its developed-markets cohort, for roughly 1,100 large and mid-cap stocks.
- Full replication rather than sampling: it buys the MSCI Kokusai index's stocks outright, and has tracked that benchmark closely.
- The rare fund that carves out Japan instead of the US, so an investor already holding Japan directly can own the rest of the developed world without doubling up.msci.com
- Plain 1940 Act ETF, passive index mandate, quarterly distributions. No derivatives, no leverage, no outcome period to track.
Worth knowing
- The index spans 22 developed markets and the US is one of them, so despite the international-sounding name it overlaps heavily with a US core holding.msci.commsci.com
- Thinly traded next to the giants of its category, so spreads can run wider and larger orders take more care.
- Broad ex-US peers VEA, SPDW and SCHF charge 0.03%: a different map (they keep Japan, drop the US) at a lower fee.
