Our read on MIDE

ETF.net Research

CMid-cap America with a filter: MIDE tracks S&P's Scored & Screened cut of the MidCap 400, holding roughly 300 of the names. Launched in 2021, it's the small, screened cousin in a cohort ruled by giant plain-vanilla trackers.

Stated mandate

The fund seeks investment results that generally correspond, before fees and expenses, to the performance of its underlying index.

Why people hold it

  1. 01The screen is the point: it starts from the S&P MidCap 400 and follows the Scored & Screened index rules, landing at roughly 300 stocks instead of the full roster.
  2. 02At 0.15%, the fee lands right on the median for S&P MidCap 400 trackers and below MDY's 0.23%.
  3. 03No mandate mystery: a straight index fund that aims to match its stated benchmark before fees, and it pays quarterly.

Worth knowing

  1. 01A small asset base and thin trading mean wider bid-ask spreads than the mid-cap heavyweights, a cost that shows up at the trade, not in the fee.
  2. 02Unscreened exposure to the same mid-cap universe costs less: SPMD at 0.03%, IJH at 0.05%, IVOO at 0.07%.
  3. 03The screens drop names the parent index keeps, so this follows the Scored & Screened version and moves differently from the headline S&P MidCap 400.
