Our read on OASC

ETF.net Research

DMost funds on this shelf buy an entire small-cap index for pennies. OASC instead runs US small and mid caps through OneAscent's values screen plus a growth-and-profitability filter, and charges active rates for the work.

Stated mandate

The Fund seeks to outperform the Bloomberg US 2500 Total Return Index before expenses. It invests primarily in U.S. small- and mid-cap equities, applying OneAscent’s Values-Based Screening and quantitative Corporate Lifecycle Screen.

Why people hold it

  1. 01The portfolio tracks the pitch: US small and mid caps filtered by OneAscent's Values-Based Screening and its quantitative Corporate Lifecycle Screen. Little gap between prospectus and holdings.
  2. 02Wider net than its shelf-mates. It measures itself against the Bloomberg US 2500, so mid caps are in play, where SPSM, IJR and VIOO stop at the S&P SmallCap 600.
  3. 03A values screen is the whole point here, and the cheap index trackers it sits beside apply none. If that filter is a requirement rather than a preference, this is the version that has one.
  4. 04Screens lean toward growth and profitability, so the stock list skews toward companies already earning money rather than the full small-cap grab bag.

Worth knowing

  1. 01Cost is the big trade-off: 0.64% a year, while index rivals in the same aisle run 0.03% (SPSM) to 0.07% (VIOO). The screening has to earn that gap.
  2. 02Thinly traded and modest in size, so bid-ask spreads can matter as much as the expense ratio when getting in or out.
  3. 03Launched in 2024, so the record is short, and an active screen can land well away from its benchmark in either direction. Distributions come once or twice a year, not monthly.
