Our read on PTIN
AInternational stocks with a built-in exit ramp. PTIN tracks a rules-based index that shifts between roughly 500 overseas stocks and 3-month T-bills, and it does that for 0.02% a year, a rounding error next to most international funds.
The fund seeks to track the total return of the Pacer Trendpilot International Index before fees and expenses. Its rules-based trend-following process alternates exposure between international equities and 3-Month U.S. T-Bills using three indicators.
Why people hold it
- Two basis points is the entire fee, a small fraction of the median for international equity funds and well under top-graded peers like AVDE and DFIC.
- The de-risking is mechanical: three indicators decide whether the index sits in international equities or 3-month U.S. T-Bills. Rules, not manager hunches.
- In equity mode it holds roughly 500 international stocks, so the trend call rides on top of broad exposure rather than a concentrated bet.
- Trading since 2019, so the trend switch has been tested in live markets, not just backtests.
Worth knowing
- Trend following turns late by design. Once the rules move to T-bills, the index waits for signals to flip back, so the start of a rebound can pass it by.
- This is a smaller, thinly traded fund, so spreads can run wider than the category's heavyweights and size-y orders need more care.
- Income arrives once or twice a year, not monthly, and drops to T-bill interest whenever the index is parked defensively.
