Our read on PXJ
COne of the original oilfield services ETFs (live since 2005) and still the odd one out: rather than simply owning the sector by size, it runs a momentum, quality and value screen to pick about 30 names.
The Fund tracks the Dynamic Oil Services Intellidex Index by normally investing at least 90% of total assets in its constituent common stocks. The index targets 30 U.S. companies supporting oil and gas production, processing, and distribution.
Why people hold it
- Rules with a view: the Dynamic Oil Services Intellidex Index scores US oil services names on momentum, quality and value instead of ranking them by market cap alone.invesco.com
- Costs 0.67% a year, below the median expense ratio in its energy peer group.
- Trading since 2005, so the strategy has run through several full oil booms and busts. Long history for a niche sector fund.
- Targets the picks-and-shovels crowd: roughly 30 US companies supporting oil and gas production, processing and distribution, not the producers selling the barrels.invesco.com
Worth knowing
- Cheaper than the peer median, but not the cheapest shelf: XES covers similar ground at 0.35%.
- A small fund that trades thinly, which tends to mean wider bid-ask spreads than the heavyweights of the category.
- About 30 stocks in one cyclical corner of energy. Drilling budgets swing hard, and this basket swings with them. Income arrives quarterly.
