Our read on RSPE
BMost ESG index funds still let a handful of mega-caps run the show. RSPE screens the S&P 500 for ESG leaders and then flattens the weights, so roughly 180 names each carry similar heft.
The fund seeks to track the S&P 500 Equal Weight ESG Leaders Select Index and generally invests at least 90% of assets in securities comprising that index.
Why people hold it
- Equal weighting is the whole point: rather than a few mega-caps steering the portfolio, roughly 180 ESG-screened S&P 500 names each carry similar weight.
- At 0.20% a year it comes in under the typical fund in its ESG peer group, which is unusual for a strategy that isn't plain cap-weighted.
- The mandate is narrow and closely followed: at least 90% of assets in index constituents, and it hugs its benchmark about as tightly as anything in its peer group.
Worth knowing
- The big cap-weighted ESG index funds cost less: XVV at 0.08%, SNPE and EFIV at 0.10%. Equal weighting carries a price premium here.
- A smaller, thinly traded fund next to the household-name ESG ETFs, so bid-ask spreads can run wider, especially in fast markets.
- Equal weights plus ESG screens leave a portfolio that looks quite different from the cap-weighted S&P 500, so its behavior can diverge from the headline index.

RSPE Risk
- 13.5%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.

Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −22.9%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
