Our read on SLYV
BSmall-cap value with a profitability gate. The S&P 600 only admits companies with positive earnings, so SLYV shops for cheap stocks inside an already-profitable pool. On the market since 2000, at 0.15% a year.
The fund seeks investment results corresponding generally to the total return performance of the S&P SmallCap 600 Value Index, before fees and expenses.
Why people hold it
- The S&P 600 admits only companies with positive as-reported earnings, most recent quarter and trailing four quarters. The value screen runs on top of that filter, not on a pile of cash-burners.spglobal.comspglobal.com
- 0.15% a year, under the 0.18% typical for funds tracking S&P 600 slices and less than half the 0.35% RZV charges against the same declared index.
- Trading since 2000 and spreading across roughly 500 names, it is an old hand in small-cap value rather than a recent factor launch, and it sits in the upper half of its peer group.
Worth knowing
- You pay for the tilt. Plain-vanilla S&P 600 core funds are cheaper (SPSM at 0.03%, IJR at 0.06%) if the whole small-cap index is what you are after.
- One country, one size band, one style. US small-cap value is a slice with real swings, not a diversified core.
- Volume is moderate next to the core S&P 600 giants, which can show up in spreads on larger orders. Distributions land quarterly.
