Our read on SMMD

ETF.net Research

BIts peer group is wall-to-wall Russell 2000 trackers. SMMD reaches one rung higher, tracking the Russell 2500: US small caps plus the mid-cap names pure small-cap indexes stop short of, in one iShares wrapper priced under the group's typical fee.

Stated mandate

The fund tracks the Russell 2500 Index, an index representing small- to mid-capitalization U.S. equities.

Why people hold it

  1. 01One ticket, both rungs: the Russell 2500 spans small and mid cap US stocks, so the mid-cap zone that pure small-cap indexes leave out sits inside the fund.ishares.com
  2. 020.23% a year, below the typical fee in its small-cap peer group. Not the cheapest thing on the shelf, but modest for a blended small-and-mid mandate.
  3. 03No factor tilts, no clever screens: it holds the Russell 2500 as written, and it lands in the upper half of a 20-fund small-cap group on our review.
  4. 04Running since 2017 with billions in assets under the iShares roof, and it pays distributions quarterly. Not a fragile launch.

Worth knowing

  1. 01The fee is the trade-off. Core small-cap index funds like VB and SCHA charge 0.03%, so the mid-cap extension is what you are paying up for.
  2. 02Mid caps dilute the pure small-cap exposure some portfolios are built around, and the fund overlaps with any mid-cap holding already in the mix.ishares.com
  3. 03Moderately traded rather than a volume leader in its category, so spreads can be wider than the household-name small-cap funds, especially away from midday.
