Our read on SUSA
AOne of the original US ESG funds, running since 2005. Its index is sector-neutral, so the screening happens inside each sector instead of turning into one giant bet against energy.
The fund seeks to track a sector-neutral index of U.S. large- and mid-cap companies with positive aggregate ESG ratings and extensive screens for controversial activities.
Why people hold it
- Sector-neutral construction: sector weights stay near the broad US market, so the ESG work shows up in which companies are held, not in a lopsided tilt away from energy or utilities.ishares.com
- Trading since January 2005, one of the longest-running ESG equity ETFs in the US, and today a multi-billion-dollar fund rather than a launch-week experiment.
- 0.25% a year undercuts the typical fund in its factor peer group, and the portfolio hews closely to the MSCI USA Extended ESG Select Index it advertises.
- Large- and mid-cap US names, roughly 190 of them, with cash paid out quarterly. A core-shaped equity sleeve, not a thematic sliver.
Worth knowing
- Cheaper peers sit on the same shelf: Xtrackers' USCA at 0.07% and iShares' own SIZE at 0.15%. The extended controversy screens and long history are what the extra costs buy.
- It trades lightly next to mega-cap index funds, so spreads can widen in fast markets. Limit orders are the standard fix.
- Screens for controversial activities keep some familiar large caps out, so results can drift from a plain US market index in either direction.
