Our read on TDTT
CMost short TIPS funds pick a maturity bucket and let duration drift. TDTT's index re-weights TIPS monthly to hold interest-rate sensitivity near three years, so the rate risk stays where you found it.
The Fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the iBoxx 3-Year Target Duration TIPS Index. It uses a passive indexing approach, generally replicating the index or using representative sampling when full replication is impracticable.
Why people hold it
- The index targets a modified adjusted duration of 3.0 years and rebalances monthly to keep it there, drawing on TIPS with one to ten years left to maturity.flexshares.comsec.gov
- Straight US Treasury inflation-protected bonds, passively replicated. The inflation link comes from the bonds themselves, not a swap or derivative overlay.
- Running since 2011 under Northern Trust's FlexShares banner, now a multi-billion-dollar fund on a published, rules-based index.sec.gov
- FlexShares runs the same methodology at a 5.0-year duration target (TDTF), so the family marks two fixed points on the TIPS curve.flexshares.comflexshares.com
Worth knowing
- 0.19% a year, against a roughly 0.10% category median. The big broad-market TIPS funds (SCHP, VTIP, STIP) charge 0.03%.
- Payouts track TIPS inflation accruals rather than a fixed schedule, so distributions land unevenly.
- A three-year duration target damps rate moves, it does not erase them: TIPS prices still fall when real interest rates rise.flexshares.com

TDTT Risk
- 2.4%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.

How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −7.0%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
- 0.33
