Our read on UFO
CUFO buys the space economy through a purpose-built benchmark, VettaFi's Space Index (formerly S-Network's), holding roughly 50 companies worldwide instead of leaning on a broad aerospace-and-defense proxy.
The fund aims to track the performance of the VettaFi Space Index, previously known as the S-Network Space Index, before accounting for fees and expenses.
Why people hold it
- Rules-based, not vibes-based: exposure comes from a published space index, the VettaFi Space Index, so the roster follows index methodology rather than a manager's hunches.
- Global mandate, not a US-only roster, so satellite and launch names listed overseas are in scope.
- Roughly 50 holdings keeps the theme concentrated rather than diluted across hundreds of tangentially related names.
- A billion-dollar-plus fund that trades actively for such a narrow theme, which generally means easier entries and exits than a thin thematic sleeve. Upper half of its space peer group.
Worth knowing
- 0.75% a year sits at the space-cohort median, and cheaper index routes exist: ROKT at 0.45%, ORBX at 0.50%.
- One theme, about 50 stocks. Contract wins, launch schedules and satellite demand drive the whole portfolio, so moves can be sharper than a broad global equity fund.
- Distributions arrive once or twice a year at most. This is structured as a thematic equity holding, not an income vehicle.

UFO Risk
- 38.9%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.
- 0.84
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −49.3%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
- 1.86
How it’s calculated: beta
The beta figure is supplied by FMP. The comparison index depends on the fund’s broad asset class.
