Our read on USD
BA 2x daily bet on US chipmakers that has been running since 2007. USD aims to double the Dow Jones U.S. Semiconductors Index for one day, then resets, which makes it a trading instrument rather than a set-and-forget holding.
The Fund seeks daily results, before fees and expenses, equal to two times the daily performance of the Dow Jones U.S. Semiconductors Index for a single day.
Why people hold it
- 0.95% a year, under the median fee for leveraged bull funds and a hair below ProShares' own Ultra QQQ (QLD, 0.98%).
- A category veteran: trading since 2007, now a multi-billion-dollar fund that changes hands actively, so getting in and out is rarely the hard part.
- Two times daily, not triple. A lower gear of leverage on the same daily-reset chassis, and one of the stronger builds in its leveraged peer group.
- Narrow, legible mandate: roughly 40 US semiconductor names tracked passively through one published index, with no drift into adjacent tech.proshares.com
Worth knowing
- The objective is written for a single day, then resets. Hold longer and the result depends on the index's path, and choppy stretches can grind value away.
- One sector, about 40 stocks, doubled. Nothing inside cushions a semiconductor selloff, and the 2x multiple works just as hard on down days.
- The 0.95% fee is cheap for this corner of the market but still a steady drag on anything held past a short trade.

USD Risk
This fund targets a multiple of the daily move of its index and resets daily. Hold it longer than one reset and compounding makes the return diverge from that target. In choppy markets it can lose value even when the index ends flat.
- 70.3%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.
- 1.21
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −77.8%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
- 4.34
How it’s calculated: beta
The beta figure is supplied by FMP. The comparison index depends on the fund’s broad asset class.
