Our read on VLUE
BMost value funds cast a wide net and call whatever's slightly cheap a bargain. VLUE follows MSCI's Enhanced Value index and narrows US stocks to about 150 of the cheapest-looking names, for 0.15% a year. A sharper, more concentrated take on value.
The fund aims to follow an index selecting U.S. stocks with value characteristics, providing exposure to undervalued companies with potential for long-term growth.
Why people hold it
- Deep screen, not a wide net: about 150 stocks picked by the MSCI USA Enhanced Value Index, so the value tilt actually shows up instead of getting diluted across half the market.ishares.com
- 0.15% a year, below the 0.18% median for its value-factor peer group. Modest toll for a rules-based screen rather than a plain cap-weighted slice.
- A multi-billion-dollar fund that has been running since 2013, trades actively, and pays quarterly.
Worth knowing
- Concentration cuts both ways. About 150 names means chunkier single-stock and sector positions than the broadest value funds carry.
- Plain broad-market value costs less: VTV, IUSV and SCHV all charge under 0.06%.
- This is a value tilt, not the whole market. The screen can keep it out of step with a standard US index for long stretches.
