Our read on VXF
AEverything the S&P 500 leaves out. VXF tracks the S&P Completion Index, roughly 3,400 US mid- and small-cap names, and a company promoted into the 500 gets dropped from here. The classic completion half of a large-cap core.
The fund seeks to track the investment performance of the S&P Completion Index, an unmanaged benchmark representing U.S. mid- and small-capitalization stocks.
Why people hold it
- Costs 0.05% a year, against a 0.45% median for its index-fund peer group. Vanguard has run it since 2001.
- One ticker for the US market outside the S&P 500, about 3,400 stocks. Zero overlap by construction: index rules remove a company from the Completion Index as soon as the S&P 500 adds it.spglobal.com
- Index-tracking discipline sits among the strongest in its peer group, and it is a multi-billion-dollar fund with steady daily volume. Distributions land quarterly.
Worth knowing
- Mid- and small-cap stocks swing harder than blue chips, and this index reaches well down the size scale. A bumpier ride than an S&P 500 fund.
- It owns none of the S&P 500 by design, so on its own it is a slice of the US market rather than the whole thing.spglobal.com
- A few funds in the same peer group run cheaper still (SCHK at 0.03%, SPYV at 0.04%), though they track different slices of the market.

VXF Risk
- 18.3%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.
- 0.77
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −36.4%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
- 1.13
How it’s calculated: beta
