Our read on XSMO
CMomentum applied only to small caps that already make money. XSMO fishes in the S&P SmallCap 600, which demands positive earnings to get in, then keeps the strongest-trending slice of it. Running since 2005.
The fund is based on the S&P Smallcap 600 Momentum Index and invests at least 90% of total assets in the index's component securities.
Why people hold it
- The universe screens first: S&P 600 entry requires positive earnings in the latest quarter and across the trailing four. Momentum picks from that pool, not from every small cap with a chart.spglobal.com
- Mechanics are written down, not improvised: 12-month risk-adjusted momentum that skips the most recent month, weights tied to size times momentum score, reset each March and September.spglobal.comindexologyblog.com
- A 2005 launch and a multi-billion-dollar asset base put this among the veterans of factor investing, not the recent momentum crowd. Distributions come quarterly.
Worth knowing
- The 0.36% fee sits above the middle of the US factor pack, and broader factor exposure comes cheaper (SIZE runs 0.15%).
- Momentum only refreshes twice a year, so the portfolio can carry yesterday's leaders through a sharp rotation until the next rebalance.spglobal.com
- Roughly 110 names out of 600 is a concentrated small-cap sleeve. Security and sector weight caps limit the tilt; they do not erase it.indexologyblog.com
