Key takeaways
Constellation Energy rose 12% on Tuesday after Google agreed to fund upgrades that would get more electricity from reactors the company already runs.
The 20-year contract covers 890 megawatts of new capacity at 11 reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The first of that power is expected in 2028, and Constellation said it would invest more than $4.3 billion. Google and Constellation said 890 megawatts is as much electricity as a large new reactor.
Google also signed a 15-year contract for 2,700 megawatts from Constellation plants that are already producing. That is power on the grid today, not more new capacity.
Talen Energy rose 12%, and Vistra rose 11%. Constellation, Talen and Vistra, the three largest holdings in Virtus's actively managed utility fund, UTES, are about a third of it, and they accounted for most of its 5.6% gain. The large U.S. utility companies, held in XLU, gained 3%.
