Oil falls to $93.04 as Hormuz talks and Houthi missiles pull both ways

West Texas Intermediate is at $93.04, down 1.7%, as of about 6:50 a.m. Eastern on Friday, September 25, 2026, after reports of U.S.-Iran talks on a Hormuz reopening; the 10-year yield was 5.18% Thursday.

U.S. and Iranian negotiators in New York are exploring a phased end to the war, including a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reported, even as Houthi missiles into Saudi Arabia kept the supply risk live. Thursday’s crude rally did not travel well. West Texas Intermediate is at $93.04 a barrel, down 1.7%, as of about 6:50 a.m. Eastern. Brent, the global barrel, is at $105.64, down 0.9%.

That is a smaller move than yesterday morning’s jump, when WTI was changing hands sharply higher. The U.S. oil fund USO, which gained 2.9% on Thursday, is 2.2% below that close in extended trading. Long Treasuries have barely bounced.

WTI, Hormuz, and a 5.18% 10-year

The 10-year Treasury yield was 5.18% on Thursday, with the 2-year at 4.87% and the 30-year at 5.47%. The long-Treasury fund TLT closed at a 52-week low of $79.42, down 1.3% on the day and 2.9% over five sessions.

The last two sessions took out September’s bounce.

In extended trading it is bid just 0.1% above that close.

Thursday showed what sits under that yield: 4,560 of 5,567 priced funds fell, even as the S&P 500 closed at 7,704.13, down 2 points. The Russell 2000 fund IWM is down 1.3% over five sessions while the Nasdaq-100 fund QQQ is up 3.4%.

A 1.7% drop in crude has not produced a bid in long Treasuries. Our reading of that 0.1% bounce in TLT is that something other than energy is setting the long end of the curve. If the 10-year yield is lower by the cash open, this reading is wrong.

The supply news is still two-sided. Sources close to the talks, Reuters said, have described a path in which Tehran restores Hormuz traffic and Washington lifts its economic blockade of Iran. Saudi Arabia said it intercepted Houthi ballistic missiles aimed at Taif and the Red Sea port of Yanbu. Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan agreed on Thursday to put their chiefs of staff into talks on support for Riyadh. None of that is a reopened strait, and none of it is a closed one either.

Costco Wholesale, the warehouse-club retailer, reported after Thursday’s close. Comparable sales rose 9.4%, digitally enabled comps rose 19.5%, and diluted earnings were $6.75 a share, including a non-recurring $0.15 a share from tariff refunds. Shares closed Thursday at $896.48, down 0.9%, before the release. In extended trading they were little changed, at about $895, against a 52-week high of $1,096.50. A quarter that strong bought the stock nothing overnight, with long bonds having just made a year low.

August durables at 8:30 a.m.

The Census Bureau publishes August’s advance durable-goods report at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. July new orders were $339.3 billion, up 1.1%, with orders excluding transportation up 0.4%. Economists expect August new orders down 0.3%, and orders excluding transportation up 0.6%. The University of Michigan’s final September consumer survey is due later this morning; the preliminary reading was 47.8, down from 51.7 in August, and economists expect it to stay there. The number that would test the rates reading is orders excluding transportation. Another gain would say demand, not oil, is what is holding the 10-year here. A drop would be the rate relief this morning’s crude has not produced.
