US and China back a $30 billion tariff plan, without new rates

China's foreign ministry said Saturday that President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump had endorsed a tariff-reduction arrangement covering $30 billion of goods in each direction.

A shipment under the plan still pays the duty it paid on Friday.

The White House fact sheet called the step recommendations for more favorable tariff treatment of non-sensitive goods.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Friday, "If we have trade disputes in the future or if there are tariff measures in the future, we just leave those things to the side."

In 2025 the United States shipped China about $106 billion of goods and bought about $309 billion, on the Census Bureau's count of goods. Against those totals, $30 billion in each direction is 28.3% of what the United States sold China and 9.7% of what it bought.

American products on the list include agricultural goods, fish and seafood, logs and wood products, cosmetics and medical devices. Chinese products include consumer goods such as small appliances, toys, holiday decorations, and children's car seats.

The recommendations came under the U.S.-China Board of Trade, a channel the two leaders set up at their May summit in Beijing and put into operation this week. Greer had said in May that the US side would begin with a public call for comment before negotiating with Beijing.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday the tariff truce would run until January 10, 2027.

In August the Congressional Research Service, using July figures, estimated the average US tariff on Chinese goods at about 36.5%, and China's average on American goods at 31%.

China's foreign ministry described a dialogue on the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence, and a channel for AI-related incidents. Both sides put the next discussion in November.

The White House calls the dialogue the Super Intelligence Dialogue, for the risks and benefits of that technology. Greer said the talks did not cover a small amount of high-end American chips that require licenses.

"These are the crown jewels of American technology," he said. "It's the way we stay ahead in the race for superintelligence, or AI."

US stocks next trade on Monday. Greer said the administration would publish the details that day.
