Key takeaways

  • Hockey and baseball filings landed only weeks before this.
  • The fee, the exchange, and every ticker are blank.
  • CME's own sports page does not list these indexes.
  • Both crypto funds would own a Cayman futures company.

Volatility Shares Trust on Friday, September 25, filed for a separate fund on each of 30 men's professional basketball teams, its third league in six weeks.

It filed hockey-team funds on Friday, August 14, and a fund for every Major League Baseball club on Monday, September 21, Volatility Shares files 30 ETFs on MLB team performance before the futures exist.

Friday's basketball prospectus amends the trust's existing registration. It is marked subject to completion, and the management fee and the listing exchange are blank.

The paper uses Rule 485(a)(2), which starts a 75-day clock. The registration would become effective on Wednesday, December 9, unless the SEC delays it.

Each fund would seek, before fees, the performance of futures on a CME index for one team. The Houston series names the CME FSPI Houston Mens Professional Basketball Team Index. The filing says the indexes are built from official game statistics, with points added for positive actions and subtracted for negative ones.

The hockey paper named the clubs, including an Anaheim Ducks ETF. The baseball paper did too, including an Arizona Diamondbacks ETF.

Friday's basketball paper uses place names: the Houston Mens Professional Basketball Team ETF, the Los Angeles Mens Professional Basketball Team 1 ETF, the Los Angeles Mens Professional Basketball Team 2 ETF, and the California Mens Professional Basketball Team ETF. The tickers on that paper are blank.

As of Monday morning, CME's sports-index page listed contracts on 32 NHL teams, scheduled for Monday, September 28, and still marked pending regulatory review. A FAQ dated Thursday, September 17, says that hockey set is the initial offering, and that the exchange will keep evaluating other sports and leagues.

REX ETF Trust filed one-fund-per-team papers for baseball and hockey that same Monday, in versions that match the futures and in versions that seek twice the daily move, REX files Alpha Sports ETFs: one fund per MLB team, unlevered and 2x. Roundhill ETF Trust filed on Tuesday, September 22, for a fund on every baseball club. Tidal Trust filed on July 9 for the Subversive All Season Sports ETF, which would seek exposure to event contracts on sporting-event outcomes.

In May the SEC delayed the first prediction-market ETFs. Jeffrey Ptak, managing director at Morningstar Research Services, called the hockey structure "another form of financialized betting." Jean-Paul Bureaud, executive director of FAIR Canada, called a product that lets people bet on a team's season "gambling repackaged as finance."

Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap

The same Friday, the trust filed two more preliminary prospectuses, on the same 75-day clock. One would seek twice Bitcoin Cash's price move for a single day, before fees. The other would do the same for Uniswap's token, UNI. Both would get the exposure through futures held by a Cayman Islands company the fund would wholly own.

On Tuesday, September 22, CME said it will list Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures on Monday, October 19, pending regulatory review. Justin Young, chief executive and co-founder of Volatility Shares, was quoted in that CME release endorsing the contracts. The trust filed these two funds three days later.

Bitwise filed on February 5, 2026, to register a spot Uniswap fund that would hold the token. That filing left the exchange and ticker blank.

The basketball funds name CME indexes that the exchange's sports-index page and its September 17 FAQ do not list. The hockey contracts on that page were still pending review on the Monday they were scheduled to launch.
