BBHBVanEck Biotech ETF

BBPAVirtus Biotech ETF

In short

BBH Biotech, distilled. BBH tracks an index of around 25 US-listed drug and diagnostics companies, so each name carries real weight instead of getting lost in a crowd. Running since 2011, at a fee below the typical biotech fund.

BBP Biotech, minus the coin flips. BBP tracks an index of US-listed biotech companies that already have at least one FDA-approved therapy, so the basket leans commercial-stage instead of clinical-trial hopefuls.

Stated mandate

BBH The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the MVIS US Listed Biotech 25 Index. That index represents companies involved in developing, producing, marketing, and selling drugs based on genetic analysis and diagnostic equipment.

BBP The fund seeks to track the LifeSci Biotechnology Products Index, which consists of U.S.-listed biotechnology stocks with at least one FDA-approved drug therapy.

Why people hold it

  • BBH 0.35% a year, below the 0.50% typical for biotech funds and level with XBI.
  • Around 25 holdings, so the leaders in the index actually move the fund rather than getting diluted across hundreds of tickers.
  • Rules-based: it follows the MVIS US Listed Biotech 25 Index, no manager guessing which drug pipeline pans out.vaneck.com
  • Trading since 2011, through several full biotech cycles, and it sits in the upper half of its biotech peer group.
  • BBP The screen does the heavy lifting: index membership requires at least one FDA-approved drug therapy, which filters out pre-approval story stocks.
  • 0.34% a year undercuts the biotech cohort median of 0.50% and sits below IBB's 0.44%.
  • Running since 2014 and spread across roughly 200 US-listed names, so one approval or rejection does not decide the whole basket.
  • One of the stronger builds in its biotech and genomics peer group, with a portfolio that stays close to the index it promises.

Worth knowing

  • BBH Concentration cuts both ways: with roughly 25 names, one failed trial or patent cliff lands hard.
  • One of the less-traded funds in the biotech aisle, so bid-ask spreads deserve attention. Limit orders are the usual fix.
  • Not the cheapest seat in the category: IBBQ charges 0.19%.
  • BBP Thinly traded and modest in size next to the category's household names. Spreads can widen, which makes limit orders the safer habit.
  • Income is not the point here. The fund has not been paying distributions, so the return story is price.
  • An approved drug filters risk, it does not erase it. This is a single-sector biotech basket, and sector drawdowns hit everything in it.

BBH vs BBP Holdings

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
