Our read on BBH
BBiotech, distilled. BBH tracks an index of around 25 US-listed drug and diagnostics companies, so each name carries real weight instead of getting lost in a crowd. Running since 2011, at a fee below the typical biotech fund.
The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the MVIS US Listed Biotech 25 Index. That index represents companies involved in developing, producing, marketing, and selling drugs based on genetic analysis and diagnostic equipment.
Why people hold it
- 0.35% a year, below the 0.50% typical for biotech funds and level with XBI.
- Around 25 holdings, so the leaders in the index actually move the fund rather than getting diluted across hundreds of tickers.
- Rules-based: it follows the MVIS US Listed Biotech 25 Index, no manager guessing which drug pipeline pans out.vaneck.com
- Trading since 2011, through several full biotech cycles, and it sits in the upper half of its biotech peer group.
Worth knowing
- Concentration cuts both ways: with roughly 25 names, one failed trial or patent cliff lands hard.
- One of the less-traded funds in the biotech aisle, so bid-ask spreads deserve attention. Limit orders are the usual fix.
- Not the cheapest seat in the category: IBBQ charges 0.19%.
