CMDYAiShares Bloomberg Roll Select Commodity Strategy ETF

In short

BCI Broad commodity exposure (energy, metals, grains, livestock) wrapped so your broker sends a 1099, not a K-1. It tracks the Bloomberg Commodity Index and charges one of the lowest fees in the broad-basket commodity aisle.

CMDY Commodities without the worst of the futures math. CMDY tracks the Roll Select version of the Bloomberg commodity index, where contract choice is written into the rules to ease rolling costs, and charges 0.29% to do it.

Stated mandate

BCI The Fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the performance of the Bloomberg Commodity Index Total Return SM.

CMDY The fund seeks to track an index representing a broad range of commodity exposures, using enhanced roll selection on a total-return basis.

Why people hold it

  • BCI Charges 0.26% a year, against a peer-group median well north of 0.60%. In an aisle where commodity wrappers get expensive, that gap is the pitch.
  • Futures sit inside a wholly owned Cayman subsidiary, which keeps the fund a 1940 Act fund and means a 1099 at tax time instead of a partnership K-1.sec.gov
  • Its index caps any sector at 33% and any single commodity at 15%, reweighted annually, so crude can't quietly swallow the portfolio the way it can in production-weighted benchmarks.bbhub.io
  • Trading since 2017 and now a multi-billion-dollar, actively traded fund, it sits among the strongest implementations in the broad commodity basket group.
  • CMDY The name is the strategy. Enhanced roll selection is baked into the index it tracks, so which futures contract to hold is a rule, not an afterthought.
  • 0.29% a year sits in the low-fee tier of broad commodity funds, next to BCI, CERY and BCD, and well under what the category typically charges.
  • One ticker, a broad basket of roughly 60 futures positions, run on a total-return basis that counts collateral income alongside commodity price moves.
  • Live since 2018 under the iShares roof, and one of the stronger implementations in its broad-basket commodity peer group.

Worth knowing

  • BCI Returns come from rolling futures contracts, not warehoused metal or barrels, so the ride can diverge from the spot prices you see in headlines.sec.gov
  • Cash payouts land once or twice a year at most. Commodities show up here as a diversifier, not an income stream.
  • Sibling fund BCD runs the same commodity family with longer-dated contracts for 0.30%, a different answer to the roll question.
  • CMDY Moderately traded rather than a volume monster. Spreads can run wider than the mega-cap index funds, which shows up most on large or hurried orders.
  • It is structured as a commodity pool, not a plain stock fund, so the tax paperwork and reporting work differently. Check the details before filing season.
  • Distributions land annually or semiannually, not monthly, and the roll rule addresses futures mechanics only. Commodity prices still swing hard on their own.
