In short

BNDD Most bond funds are built around inflation fear. BNDD takes the other side: US Treasuries paired with options on the interest rate swap curve, aimed at deflation, falling long-term rates and a flattening curve.

FLGV Treasuries only, anywhere from 1 to 30 years, in one ticker. Franklin charges 0.09%, under the typical fee in its Treasury peer group, and the income lands monthly.

Stated mandate

BNDD The Fund seeks to benefit from lower growth, deflation, lower or negative long-term interest rates, and a narrowing spread between shorter- and longer-term rates through investments in U.S. Treasuries and options.

FLGV The Fund seeks income and normally invests at least 80% of net assets in direct U.S. Treasury obligations and related Treasury exposures. It may hold Treasury securities of any maturity, with primary emphasis on remaining maturities from 1 to 30 years.

Why people hold it

  • BNDD A rare, undiluted expression of the deflation trade. It targets lower growth, lower or negative long-term rates, and a narrowing gap between short and long yields.
  • The plumbing is simple to picture: a core of US Treasuries, plus an options sleeve tied to the shape of the US interest rate swap curve.
  • Actively managed, not index-tracking, so the curve position can be reshaped as rates move. Distributions come monthly.
  • FLGV One ticker for the whole Treasury curve: at least 80% of net assets in direct U.S. Treasury obligations, with the emphasis on maturities running 1 to 30 years.
  • 0.09% a year undercuts the 0.12% median for Treasury funds in its peer group. On government paper, where yields are what they are, the fee is the lever you control.
  • Pays monthly, and it is a multi-billion-dollar fund, so the income arrives on a predictable schedule rather than in quarterly lumps.
  • Since its 2020 launch it has hewed tightly to its stated Treasury mandate, one of the closer mandate matches in a crowded Treasury peer group.

Worth knowing

  • BNDD The overlay is not cheap: 1.02% a year, while plain Treasury funds in the same cohort (VGIT, SCHP, VGUS) charge a tiny fraction of that. Among the priciest ways to own Treasury exposure.
  • Directional by design. When long-term rates climb or the curve steepens, the options position works against the fund, and options can expire worthless.
  • A small, thinly traded fund since its 2021 launch, so spreads can widen. Limit orders are the sane way in and out.
  • FLGV Cheaper shelf-mates exist: VGIT and VTG run 0.03%, a third of this fee. You are paying a bit more for Franklin's version of the same government paper.
  • Moderately traded rather than one of the tape's busiest Treasury funds, so spreads matter more on large or hurried orders.
  • Holdings can stretch out to 30-year maturities, so this carries real interest-rate sensitivity, not the calm of a T-bill fund.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
