BREMCiShares Emerging Markets Bond Active ETF

EMHCAState Street SPDR Bloomberg Emerging Markets USD Bond ETF

In short

BREM A bond fund sitting in a peer group stuffed with emerging markets stock trackers. BREM is iShares' active take on EM debt: roughly 150 positions run for total return from income and capital growth, not to match an index.

EMHC Emerging market debt without the currency roulette. EMHC holds only dollar-denominated bonds, and its index reaches past national governments into state-owned issuers, roughly 500 positions, for 0.23% a year.

Stated mandate

BREM The fund seeks to maximize total return through both income and capital growth.

EMHC The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the Bloomberg Emerging Market USD Sovereign and Sovereign Owned Index. It is designed to provide broad exposure to fixed-rate U.S.-dollar-denominated debt issued by emerging-market sovereign and quasi-sovereign issuers.

Why people hold it

  • BREM Actively run rather than index-bound: the managers pick across emerging market debt with a stated mandate to maximize total return through income and capital growth.ishares.com
  • 0.50% a year buys active bond management at essentially the 0.49% median fee of its emerging markets peer group.
  • Roughly 150 bonds spread across the portfolio, so no single borrower carries the whole thing.
  • EMHC Costs 0.23% a year, below the median expense ratio in its bond peer group.
  • Tracks sovereign and sovereign-owned dollar debt, roughly 500 bonds, so state-backed issuers count too, not just national governments.
  • Everything in it is dollar-denominated. Local currency moves against the dollar don't flow into the return the way they do in local-debt funds.
  • Pays monthly, and has run inside State Street's SPDR bond lineup since 2021.

Worth knowing

  • BREM Launched in October 2025, so it is early in its life: small asset base, light trading, and less than a full market cycle of history to judge.
  • The fee leaders in its peer group are passive stock funds (VEXC at 0.07%, XCEM at 0.16%). Different exposure entirely, but active bond work carries the higher price tag.
  • Emerging market debt means sovereign, credit and currency swings layered on top of interest rate moves, a different ride than a US bond fund.
  • EMHC Not one of the heavily traded names in its category. Spreads can run wider than on core bond funds like BND or SPAB, so order type and timing matter more.
  • Emerging market government and state-owned credit brings default and political risk that Treasuries don't, and it sits at the riskier end of its bond cohort.
  • The mandate is emerging market dollar bonds only. No Treasuries, no US corporates, so it works as a slice beside a core bond holding rather than as one.

BREM vs EMHC Holdings

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
