CERYAState Street SPDR Bloomberg Enhanced Roll Yield Commodity Strategy No K-1 ETF

GSGCiShares S&P GSCI Commodity-Indexed Trust

In short

CERY Broad commodity exposure without the K-1 envelope. CERY tracks Bloomberg's Enhanced Roll Yield index, a rules-based long-only basket held through synthetic futures, and charges 0.28% in a category where the typical fee is far higher.

GSG The old-guard commodity trade. Since 2006, GSG has tracked the S&P GSCI, a fully collateralized basket of commodity futures, while most of the newer competition is built on Bloomberg indexes and roll-tweaking overlays.

Stated mandate

CERY The fund seeks to track the Bloomberg Enhanced Roll Yield Total Return Index, which represents diversified, long-only exposure to broad commodities through synthetic futures positions.

GSG The fund seeks to track a fully collateralized index representing a diversified group of commodity futures.

Why people hold it

  • CERY Costs 0.28% a year against a category norm nearer 0.68%. Fees bite hard in commodity futures funds, where there are no dividends to paper over the drag.
  • Tracks Bloomberg's Enhanced Roll Yield index: rules-based, long-only commodity exposure via synthetic futures. Roll mechanics come from index design, not a manager's call.ssga.com
  • Built as a 1940 Act fund, so shareholders get a 1099 rather than the partnership K-1 that many commodity futures vehicles send.ssga.com
  • Sits with BCI and BCD at the low-fee end of the broad commodity futures group and rates among the strongest implementations in it.
  • GSG Tracks the S&P GSCI Total Return Index: a diversified, fully collateralized futures basket, with collateral interest built into the index rather than paid out.ishares.com
  • Live since 2006, so its record spans more than one commodity boom and bust.
  • A different engine from the pack: peers like BCI, BCD and CMDY run Bloomberg commodity indexes, while GSG stays with the S&P GSCI.
  • Actively traded, so getting in and out is generally straightforward.

Worth knowing

  • CERY Launched in 2024, so the record is short. The roll rules have not been tested across a full commodity cycle yet.
  • Long-only by design. There is no short side, so a broad commodity downturn passes straight through to the fund.
  • Distributions come once or twice a year. This is commodity price exposure, not a paycheck.
  • GSG The 0.75% fee sits above the broad-commodity norm: BCI charges 0.26% and CMDY 0.29% for a similar all-in-one basket.
  • Commodity futures swing hard, and this one sits among the more volatile choices even inside its own category.
  • No distributions: collateral interest shows up inside the total-return index instead of arriving as income.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
