DFNMADimensional National Municipal Bond ETF

SCMBASchwab Municipal Bond ETF

In short

DFNM Active muni management on a short leash. Dimensional leans longer on the curve when longer bonds pay for the risk, but keeps duration inside a band anchored to an intermediate AMT-free muni index.

SCMB Schwab's take on the core muni sleeve: three basis points, thousands of AMT-free bonds from across the country, and a monthly distribution. Bottom-of-the-table pricing, no frills attached.

Stated mandate

DFNM The fund seeks current income expected to be exempt from federal income tax.

SCMB The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the total return of an index representing the U.S. AMT-free municipal bond market.

Why people hold it

  • DFNM The mechanism: when the expected term premium favors longer maturities it focuses there, otherwise shorter, all inside a documented duration band around its benchmark.sec.gov
  • 0.17% net (0.18% gross, net of a waiver through February 28, 2027) sits below the muni category median fee, which is unusual for a fund with a manager making calls.
  • Roughly 1,000 bonds, investment grade at purchase, with no stated intent to hold munis whose interest is subject to the federal AMT. Income pays monthly.sec.gov
  • SCMB Three basis points a year, against a 0.30% median for muni bond funds. Among the top-graded names in the category, only Vanguard's VTEB matches that fee.
  • Follows the ICE AMT-Free Core U.S. National Municipal Index across thousands of bonds and issuers, so no single borrower or state drives the portfolio.
  • Plain passive plumbing done well: it stays close to its index, trades actively, and pays monthly. One of the stronger implementations in the muni aisle.

Worth knowing

  • DFNM Index rivals charge less: VTEB and SCMB 0.03%, MUB 0.05%. The systematic curve and credit work is what the extra cost buys.
  • Intermediate rate risk is baked in. The band allows duration a half year above or a full year below the benchmark's, so prices move when yields do.sec.gov
  • Federal exemption is the target, not state. Dimensional houses state-level breaks in separate funds, such as its California muni ETF.sec.gov
  • SCMB Launched in 2022, so its live record is shorter than muni staples like MUB and VTEB, even though the strategy is the same broad-market idea.
  • Bond math still applies. This is a portfolio of municipal bonds, so share prices move opposite to interest rates.
  • National in scope, not single-state like NYF, so it is not built around any one state's tax rules.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
