SCHYASchwab International Dividend Equity ETF

In short

DWX DWX goes hunting for the fattest dividends outside the US: roughly 100 high yielders pulled from the S&P Global ex-US BMI, China A shares excluded. Yield first, and it has been running that playbook since 2008.

SCHY Schwab's dividend playbook with a passport: an index of non-US high payers filtered for sustained dividends, financial strength and low volatility, run for 0.08% a year while the typical fund in its group charges 0.50%.

Stated mandate

DWX The Fund seeks to track the total return of the S&P International Dividend Opportunities Index, an index of high-yielding international common stocks selected from the S&P Global ex-U.S. BMI, excluding China A shares.

SCHY The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, an index of high-dividend-yielding stocks issued by companies outside the United States. Its index methodology emphasizes sustained dividend payments, relative financial strength, and lower volatility.

Why people hold it

  • DWX Yield-first by design. The index screens for high-yielding international common stocks rather than steady dividend growers, so the basket leans where payouts are richest.
  • One of the older international dividend ETFs on the board, live since 2008, with a full market cycle of history behind the strategy.
  • Tracks its benchmark tightly, one of the cleaner index implementations among international dividend funds, and the fee sits below the typical charge in that group.
  • Concentrated on purpose: about 100 names, paying quarterly. You get a focused slice of global high-yield equity, not a 1,500-stock index blur.
  • SCHY Costs 0.08% a year against a 0.50% median for international dividend screens, one of the cheapest ways to rent this strategy.
  • The index does more than chase yield: it screens for sustained payers, relative financial strength and lower volatility. Cash goes out quarterly.
  • A plain passive tracker of the Dow Jones International Dividend 100 Index that has hugged its benchmark closely, with a multibillion-dollar base and shares that trade actively.
  • Stands among the stronger implementations in its international dividend peer group on cost, tracking and tradability.

Worth knowing

  • DWX It trades thinly for its size, so spreads can run wider than the household-name international dividend funds.
  • At 0.45%, it costs several times what plain-vanilla rivals like VYMI, SCHY and VIGI charge. You are paying up for the high-yield screen.
  • Chasing the highest yields abroad concentrates the fund in whichever sectors and countries are paying most at rebalance, a different risk mix than a broad international index.
  • SCHY Roughly 130 stocks, a narrower net than a broad international fund. Dividend screens naturally bunch up in a handful of sectors and countries.
  • Launched in 2021, so it carries a shorter live record than the veterans of international dividend investing.
  • Two neighbors shave the fee a touch further: VYMI and VIGI charge 0.07%, though each screens for different things.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
