FDIFBFidelity Disruptors ETF

IBOTAVanEck Robotics ETF

In short

FDIF Fidelity's disruption bet, aimed at companies remaking work through automation. It charges 0.50% where the typical robotics-theme fund asks 0.65%, and it has been running since 2020. The trade-off: it trades quietly.

IBOT A straight robotics play. IBOT tracks the BlueStar Robotics Index across about 70 companies tied to robotics, rather than a broad basket of tech "disruptors", and charges well under the typical fee in its niche.

Stated mandate

FDIF The fund seeks long-term capital appreciation by investing primarily in companies involved in disruptive automation.

IBOT The fund seeks to track the BlueStar Robotics Index as closely as possible, before fees and expenses, while following companies involved in robotics.

Why people hold it

  • FDIF Charges 0.50% a year against a 0.65% median for its robotics and automation peer group. Cheap is rare in thematic land.
  • The portfolio hews closely to the prospectus mandate: companies involved in disruptive automation, pursued for long-term capital appreciation. Little theme drift.
  • Sits in the upper tier of its robotics and automation cohort, and its risk profile reads calmer than much of a theme built on moonshots.
  • Pays out quarterly, which is more cadence than most growth-themed funds bother with.
  • IBOT 0.47% a year, comfortably below the median expense ratio among robotics and automation ETFs.
  • Index-driven and focused: roughly 70 names selected for robotics involvement, so the theme stays the theme.
  • On our review, one of the stronger builds in the robotics and automation group on cost, portfolio construction and risk profile combined.

Worth knowing

  • FDIF Thinly traded with a modest asset base. Spreads can run wider than the theme's household names, and size limits how much the fund gets talked about.
  • Portfolio construction is the weakest link in the package: a narrow, concentrated book where individual names carry real weight.
  • Fidelity's own FBOT sits in the same cohort at the same 0.50% fee, and BOTT undercuts both at 0.35%. Worth knowing what else shares the shelf.
  • IBOT Thinly traded. Spreads can run wider and sizeable orders can nudge the price more than in mainstream funds.
  • Not the cheapest shelf option: Themes Humanoid Robotics (BOTT) charges 0.35%, though it targets a narrower humanoid slice.
  • Launched in 2023, so the track record is short, and payouts come annually or semiannually rather than as a steady income stream.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
