FUTYAFidelity MSCI Utilities Index ETF

IDUBiShares U.S. Utilities ETF

In short

FUTY The whole US power grid in one ticker. Fidelity tracks an all-cap MSCI utilities index, so mid- and small-cap operators ride along with the mega-cap names, at 0.08% a year.

IDU Utilities, but drawn from the Russell 1000 and FTSE Russell's sector map, which files waste and disposal services under utilities. Live since 2000, roughly 50 large and mid-cap names, quarterly payouts.

Stated mandate

FUTY The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the performance of the MSCI USA IMI Utilities Index.

IDU The fund seeks to track an index composed of U.S. equities in the utilities sector.

Why people hold it

  • FUTY Costs 0.08% a year against a 0.37% median for broad utilities funds. That ties XLU on price and edges out VPU.
  • The MSCI USA IMI Utilities Index reaches past the S&P 500 giants into mid- and small-cap utilities, roughly 70 names of power, gas and water.fidelity.com
  • Plain index replication, running since 2013, with tracking that has stayed tight to the benchmark. No swaps, no options overlay, no clever wrapper.fidelity.com
  • A multi-billion-dollar fund from a major issuer that pays out quarterly, and one of the stronger builds in the utilities group.
  • IDU Its index uses FTSE Russell's classification, which places waste and disposal services inside utilities, so the basket can reach past pure power and gas names.ishares.comstoxx.com
  • Built from a subset of the Russell 1000, so mid-cap utilities sit alongside the giants, not just the mega-cap slice.ishares.com
  • Trading since 2000 with a billion-dollar-plus asset base, it has tracked its index closely and pays quarterly.
  • The 22.5/45 in the index name is a diversification cap, trimming the largest utility positions rather than letting one name run the show.ishares.com

Worth knowing

  • FUTY This is one sector, about 70 stocks. When utilities are out of favor, there is nowhere in the portfolio to hide.
  • Moderately traded rather than the category's busiest tape, so limit orders are the sane habit on larger tickets.
  • The all-cap reach cuts both ways: smaller utilities in the mix behave differently from the household-name giants that dominate S&P 500-only rivals.
  • IDU At 0.37%, the fee sits near the category median but well above XLU at 0.08%, FUTY at 0.084% and VPU at 0.09%. No waiver is in place.
  • One sector, about 50 holdings: the fund rises and falls with regulated utilities, and the cap still leaves top names carrying real weight.ishares.com
  • That different sector map cuts both ways: the mix can diverge from utilities funds built on other classification systems.stoxx.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
