XPAYBRoundhill S&P 500 Target 20 Managed Distribution ETF

In short

GPIX Most option-income funds sell the whole rally for yield. GPIX is written to ask for both: current income and preserved prospects for capital appreciation, on a roughly 500-stock S&P 500 core, at 0.35%, paid monthly.

XPAY Most S&P 500 income funds sell upside to fund the check. XPAY skips that: it holds index exposure through FLEX options and pays out 20% of its year-end NAV in twelve monthly slices, mostly as return of capital.

Stated mandate

GPIX The Fund seeks current income while preserving prospects for capital appreciation. It invests primarily in benchmark-related stocks and sells call options providing exposure to the benchmark to generate premium income.

XPAY The fund seeks current income while also seeking exposure to the performance of the S&P 500 Index.

Why people hold it

  • GPIX The mandate is income without giving up on growth: hold benchmark stocks, sell calls tied to the S&P 500 for premium, and keep prospects for capital appreciation.
  • The 0.35% fee sits below the typical charge among S&P 500 option-income peers, including older buy-write names like XYLD.
  • Roughly 500 stocks underneath and cash out the door monthly, so the equity engine is the index itself rather than a synthetic stand-in.
  • A multi-billion-dollar, actively traded fund launched in 2023, and one of the tighter implementations of this strategy in its peer group.
  • XPAY The payout is a formula, not a forecast: 20% of the December closing NAV, divided by twelve. The per-share monthly amount is set for the full calendar year and published up front.roundhillinvestments.comroundhillinvestments.com 2
  • Distributions are designed to arrive as return of capital, which is not taxed in the year received and instead reduces your cost basis.prnewswire.com
  • At 0.49% it costs less than the typical fund in its S&P 500 income cohort, and unlike buy-write peers such as IVVW it is not selling index upside to raise the cash.roundhillinvestments.com
  • Roundhill states the mechanism plainly (SPY FLEX options, an annual December reset, return-of-capital payouts) and the fund runs to that script. Upper half of a crowded cohort.roundhillinvestments.com

Worth knowing

  • GPIX Premium income comes from selling upside. Where calls are written, gains are capped, so a fast melt-up in the S&P 500 leaves some return on the table.
  • Distributions can include return of capital, meaning part of a payout may be your own money coming back. The fund's tax disclosures show the split.
  • This is an equity fund, not a hedge. Option premium softens the ride; it does not put a floor under a market drop.
  • XPAY The distribution is paid from fund assets whatever the market does. In a year the index returns less than the payout, NAV falls, and next year's per-share amount resets lower.roundhillinvestments.comprnewswire.com
  • Return of capital is not free money. It trims your cost basis, so a later sale can carry a larger gain (or a smaller loss).prnewswire.com
  • Full S&P 500 downside, no buffer, plus a 2024 launch and moderate trading. Shorter record and thinner liquidity than the category's biggest names.roundhillinvestments.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
